Operated by Marine Produce Australia (MP), Cone Bay Barramundi is a sea cage farm in Cone Bay near Broome, Western Australia. Being an open water sea cage system, there is the potential for the Cone Bay farm to have terrible environmental impacts. However, MPA “works on the philosophy that a healthy environment produces healthy fish”. Their stringent Environmental Protection Authority approved Environmental Monitoring and Management plan ensures the Cone Bay remains an environmental treasure.

As a result they were the first aquaculture farm to be rated “low impact” and “sustainable” by the Australian Conservation Foundation under their Sustainable Australian Seafood Assessment Program and the first to be accredited under their Healthy Oceans Program. They were also recognised in the Australian Government’s State of the Environment publication as an example of when the “careful siting and management of caged fish facilities can result in acceptably low impacts and risks”.

They are a great example of how a company that cares about the environment can achieve great things!
